studying a degree from home?

Hi! I'm a 21 year old disabled student in the UK, and am desparate to start my undergraduate degree. I was offered a place at Kent uni for Classical and Archaeological studies, which I want to take, but I am very ill and can't get there. I really need to start my degree this Sept, but it seems they won't be able to let me study the course part-time from home, which is what I need. The OU don't offer any courses I want to take, so what can I do? Please help me, I'm really desparate!

Hopefully this isn’t too late. You should call the dean directly and tell them your particular situation. They probably have a standard answer, but your situation is very different and you need to talk to a person with real decision-making ability. You do not say if your illness is permanent or temporary – if you believe you will get better in some amount of time (6 months, a year) try to get the professors to allow you some special disposition to study from home. Maybe coordinate with the professors and the dean, seeing as the situation is temporary.

However, if you’ve exhausted all these possibilities, there may not be much you can do. The most important thing is to be sure you HAVE exhausted all your possibilities. Don’t let some 19 year old clerk tell you there’s nothing you can do – do everything you can to talk to someone at the top.

    Best of Luck.
