Are these the right steps to becoming a RN in Hawaii?
Hi, I live on the big island of Hawaii and I am looking into becoming a RN. I am enrolling into the University of Phoenix for online courses and to achieve my associates degree in Health Care Administration. They informed me that this would take 1 year and 9 months to complete. And yes, this is an approved program. So, the next step would be to pass the NCLEX exam? Once I pass that, then I apply to different hospitals or offices (depending on what I would like to do at that point)? This is what has been told to me, but it seems too simple! No hands on training program or does this come with the NCLEX? Sorry, I am confused and want to make sure I am headed in the right direction because I don't have the time to take unnecessary steps. Please get back to me with any advice. Thank you!!

Health care administration is NOT a nursing program, and I can’t believe Uni. of Phoenix wouldn’t tell you that. Or maybe you just assumed and didn’t ask. You need a degree in Nursing to be eligible to take NCLEX.
You cannot get your RN license through an entirely online program except in really rare circumstances where you were an EMT or something else medical related. There is always required seat-time, practicum labs, clinical experiences you must spend so many hours in for the nursing program to be accredited. Find the Hawaii State Board of Nursing and somewhere on their website should be a list of accredited nursing programs in your state.
Once you complete a nursing program, then yes, you take the NCLEX and earn your license and are ready to work.
Oh, and don’t throw away your money to a for-profit school like Uni. of Phoenix. Find a state community college or public university, tuition will be far less and you’ll get more individualized attention.
