With so many choices, it’s hard to settle on one particular career. After all, how do we really know if we are going to like the path we’ve chosen?
I spent 15 years in the computer industry before switching careers and I learned a valuable lesson. Like you, my passion is traveling. I looked at every possible angle to try and find profession that involved travel. But the reality is this… when you are traveling on the company’s dime, you have little, if any, time to enjoy the travel and you grow to hate what you once loved.
My cousin is an ICE Agent (Federal agent, immigration). He travels all over the world. He gets on a plane, travels to an exotic location, spends the night, and gets back on the plane for another 8-12 hours. He HATES it. My friend is a pilot for Southwest Airlines. Same story. He travels CONSTANTLY, but never gets to enjoy the destinations. It’s work, not fun.
So, in response to your question, there may be a better way to achieve your goal of traveling. If you pursue a career that pays well and has benefits (paid time off), you will always have the money you need to travel on your own dime and go where you want to go. That’s what I’m doing now… I’ve added Paris, London, Turkey, China, Hong Kong, Alaska… and more to my list. I get to travel now because I can afford to do so.
Also, nursing is in high-demand and can be very lucrative. But demand isn’t just here in America, it’s worldwide. So, you can really have the best of both worlds if you play your cards right. You can be a nurse here, or you can travel abroad and use your nursing skills in other countries.
