consider working in a corporation that has an event planning department ? they will usually provide training. structurally, even planning does usually report into the marketing department.
Job shadow someone who does it. To see if it is what you really want.
Just get in there and do it. Make all your mistakes, pay for them, and move on. Learn from every mistake. It may cost you money in the beginning to please your customers, but you know from the restaurant business, it takes money to make money. You want to establish a rep that you will do the right thing for your customers. Give away some things in the beginning to get more jobs. One job could brings 5 more in the same family if you do the job good. Baby showers and engagement parties are like that. Do a good job and the family will stick with you like glue. All the babies born and all the engagement parties will be yours. Just start it out as a business in progress and learn from your mistakes. Do an overkill and make less profit in the beginning to help the business take hold and build it from there. Good Luck.
