(CNSNews.com) - Sheriff Paul Babeu of Pinal County, Ariz., says it is “an outrage” the Obama administration has stopped building the double-fencing needed to assist the Border Patrol in securing the U.S.-Mexico border and says it is time for the United States to begin fighting illegal immigration and drug smuggling directly at the border instead of within the country where it harms American citizens and communities.
By the time Obama was inaugurated in January 2009, according to the Justice Department, only 108 miles of the 262-mile-long Arizona portion of the 2,000-mile-long U.S.-Mexico border had been fenced.
“We shouldn’t be fighting this battle in the interior. We should be fighting it directly on our international border,” Babeu said in an "Online With Terry Jeffrey" interview. “And it’s an outrage that our own federal government stopped building the fence.”
Babeu, whose southern Arizona county sits astride major drug-and-alien-smuggling routes running north from Mexico, has joined with Sheriff Larry Dever of Cochise County, Ariz., and Arizona’s two U.S. senators, John McCain and Jon Kyl, to push a 10-point plan for securing the border. The plan includes, among other provisions, completing the necessary border fencing, deploying 3,000 National Guard troops to cover just the Arizona stretch of the border, and deploying significantly more surveillance aircraft than are currently used to patrol the border.
Babeu, who is also a major in the Army National Guard and who did a tour in Iraq, formerly commanded Task Force Yuma, a deployment of 700 Army and Air Force National Guard troops who worked with the Border Patrol to secure one segment of the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona

I’m not sure why the fence was stopped, but most of the organized crime elements–the ones we need to root out–are tunneling under the fences and entering that way. I’d rather see those people caught than worry about small groups coming over a fence any day.
Border fences are a waste of money, and right now government wasting money is a bigger problem for our country than a few Mexicans sneaking across the border.
There used to be bipartisan consensus about this until the fences were actually tested.

Straw man issue. In tests of the fence the slowest way to get past it was going over. As the slowest way it took 37 seconds. Hardly enough time for a border agent to get to the site to catch somebody. The fastest way – Going through. 17 seconds with a torch. I think you could create a vehicle to go through it much faster.
All a waste of money to make feeble minded people think that something is being done.
Prefer high tech fencing that detects infiltrations automatically? They have false positive from cattle and pronghorns ranging at about 90%,. Want certainty that you will get through? Send a false group to the border to get response and send a second group that actually wants to get across while the first group of coyotes runs back to Mexico.
After building 2,400,000.00 dollar fence in Texas a network of tunnels was found that predated the fence. The drug dealers can afford the same equipment used to dig the chunnel from England to France, and use it every day to dig a new tunnel.
Moral there is no fence that cannot be defeated with a 200 dollar piece of Krab ladder.

Fascinating answers here. Absolutely none of the data tells us they tunnel under successfully.. a great deal tells us they do not. Further, going over it is a good way to get hurt, and the we know for a fact the illegal aliens are …..NOT tunneling under, or climbing over. They are going around for no other reason than the fence being erected in that area is very difficult to get through.
That fence.. it has been used in hot spots like the Israeli Border and it did well. It is a common design, and gets a lot of praise.
I would point out that Obama does not feel he needs to tell us about anything he is doing. Particularly in this area. He is NOT however, enforcing the law of the land and not telling us about it may be the only way he can cope with his interest in an open border.
Again too… not one word about E Verify, and the biometric identification. Both would be very, very helpful in stopping the invasion. I would also point out that if the E Verify were in place along with the biometric I.D., when he kicks the illegal aliens out of jail, they would then have a choice… go home, or starve to death. It is a very inexpensive way to create a great deal of self deporting.

Businesses that hire illegal immigrants should be punished severely. I wouldn’t have a problem with people coming here for work if they fill out the necessary papers. Of course while they’re here they should be treated only as guests and foreign nationals not as potential voters. I thought only citizens should be allowed to vote not foreigners.
