You can use the online version of Yahoo Messenger, it doesn’t require downloading anything!

You could try Trillian. It’s loads of messengers in one program. MSN, Yahoo, Aim (AOL) ICQ. Even Skype so you can be on many messengers at the same time.
It can be installed on a USB drive so you can carry it with you and you don’t need to download or install on the host PC.
Trillian is free but the free version is limited to NO webcam chat.
